Information Avoidance, Unused Potential & Humility (Thursday's Therapy)
Amigos and amigas,
It’s been a borderline psychotic week.
And by that I mean 2 nights ago I was lying on a park swing (those big round ones) at 1am in the morning, flitting between laughing at the fact everything is absurd and despairing because we're all going to die one day.
But today I did a workout. So everything is better.
Anyway...
Here is 1 idea, 1 quote and 1 question I’d like to share with you…
1.) Idea: Information avoidance.
This is a new term I've learned this week.
It describes how we avoid information that’s right in front of us.
We do so because of 3 reasons:
1.) Protecting an existing belief (changing your beliefs is annoying; if you change them you’ll have to change your opinions/perspectives or even admit you’ve been wrong which'll shatter your ego 😭)
2.) Avoiding an undesired action (facing the information you’re avoiding might mean you’ll have to change your behaviour, and ain’t nobody got time 4 dat)
3.) Reducing negative emotions (when feeling good, we want to protect those emotions at all costs, even if that means avoiding the obvious)
But here's the real problem with avoiding information...
Imagine you’re stood in a forest taking photos of the beautiful surroundings.
Suddenly you hear a grunting noise in the distance. So you turn around and see a strange brown figure about 500metres away, but its too distant for you to clearly see what it is. So you shrug your shoulders and get back to taking photos.
But the grunting noise doesn't just continue, it starts getting louder.
"Meh, who cares" you think as you continue taking photos of the beautiful trees around you, stubborn on not having your joy ruined.
But now the noise is 10 feet away and changes to a gruesome roar.
It was a bear.
Now you're dead.
The takeaway...
Sometimes its a bear, sometimes its just a fellow hiker or a falling branch.
Either way, I wouldn't risk ignoring the information in front of you.
So ask yourself...
What information are you currently avoiding?
Which of the 3 reasons above could explain why?
Might facing that information really be as bad as you think?
What if you just took a peak? 👀
Now onto a quote...
2.) Quote: Alex Hormozi warns us of unused potential.
“Most people die with 90% of their potential unused because they're afraid of a few years of hard conversations, working on stuff you have no idea how to do yet, and doing way more boring work than you thought you were capable of.”
3.) Question:
What are you missing right now that a more humble person might see?
I got this question from Ryan Holiday's book ego is the enemy.
As soon as I ask it I instantly feel more grateful and hopeful.
As if the opportunities gently reveal themselves after being hidden from view.
That's all for this week,
Thanks for reading,
Lew

P.p.s. went London and bought some Colombian coffee. I don't drink coffee. I don't know why I bought it.
